Drew and matt were eating breakfast a moment ago and Matt picked up a toy, a long cylindrical shape skinny tube. He blew into one end and shouted into it. Drew picked up the other end and also blew into it shouting. Drew asked me to blog this!

June 17, 2004 Last full day of Drew's first grade at Birch Hill Elementary with Mrs. Roach
A few mornings ago I told Drew I had a package for him to take to school. (Frequently the school sends home notes about items requested for donation that would be very appreciated and needed.) This time it was a list of items that the soldiers were requesting for personal resons - all sorts of items such as dice, instant oatmeal, snacks and individual cereal boxes. so I had picked up a few bags full the day before. When he inquired what the items were, I told him that they were a few items that the soldiers had requested be sent to them in iraq. I feel so heartily about supporting them, over there risking their lives all for us so bravely. so upon hearing that these items were requested by the soldiers, he inquired 'What - guns?' and he was not kidding. He was serious as a heart attack. I admit I was so taken aback that I burst out laughing but we talked about the soldier's needs after that, then i took him to school where I was volunteering that morning.
His teacher has no idea what it has meant to me to spend time with them this year, but it has given me a sense of belonging to this community - a sense I hadn't really had before this year. How ironic that we would end out the year by planning a move, just when I am coming to feel like we belong a bit to this very well established and provincial society known as New England.
At school it has been interesting to notice that Drew always insists on pushing matthew's stroller, when he barely involves himself with his baby brother otherwise. Perhaps he feels he is seen as a bigger boy pushing a stroller. Anyhow, he has been anxious to be seen by us as one who doesnot mistakes with the stroller, running into objects! He just finished telling John this AM that he was not going to run into a single object when the words were barely off his tongue when he hit something. I think they both had a good laugh.
He found out he would have had Mrs. Chaperian if he went on to second grade here at BH. Neat to find out, bittersweet as it was, to find out that Chris, Kareem and Reese will also be in this class. Sounds like it would have been a very positive and interesting year.
