Visiting Crossroads Fellowship Church
This morning we attended church service at Crossroads Fellowship (PCA) where my friend Charlotte's husband officiates, Reverend Mike McLaughlin. This was our third visit to this very lovely church with the most friendly people in all of Albuquerque, I am quite sure. What other church welcomes us so wholeheartedly? We asked Drew to tell us on the way home about why he likes this church so much, (as we both do also, John and I) and he responded "the food." It is true - this church serves muffins and coffee. When I asked what else he likes about it besides the good food, he responded "that church is quite advanced" and I asked "How so?" and he responded "They give Jesus' blood from little cups - people do not drink from the same container (the challis) so people do not spread each others' germs around so much" I was amazed. John and I both laughed right out loud when we heard "It is so advanced!" That just was not the thing we were expecting to hear, but he was right. He added further that "this church is so small that it is not crowded" and "smaller numbers so it is easier to get to know people." He was right - and we like these qualities about it as well. Very much! Sounds like he had been giving this a lot of thought.

A Strange Thing Last Night
I was sleeping soundly last night when I woke to find the hallway light turned on and Matt sitting next to me on the edge of the bed. He was wide awake, and said, very matter-of-factly, "Hi Daddy." I was pretty confused. I thought I might have slept in, but it was dark out, and the clock read 2:52 AM. I asked Matt if something was wrong, or if he needed something, and he just said, "No." He seemed to think it was natural for him to be there right then. Mary was ignoring him (I found out later he had been up once already and she had put him back to bed), so I told him he needed to get back to bed. He was his usual, agreeable self, until I followed him down the stairs, largely to get all the lights turned off.
The moment he saw me behind him, he fell apart, told me not to follow and basically melted down. I picked him up and carried him back to bed. I had to tell him he must quiet down so the rest of us could sleep, and he said "OK," while choking back more tears. Once I got him back to bed, he slept through the rest of the night. He never did give any reason for getting up and coming to our room, but I bet he was hoping to play with someone!

I am recalling Super Bowl weekend a few weeks ago - at good friend Heather Reu's home, with the members of her church whom we met among the last few weeks. What a super, super bunch they are. We are not church members, but have been to church there a few times, at Crossroads, run by Pastor Mike Mclaughlin, and felt welcomed though we are "outsiders." How nice is that?
Anyhow, there was one true blogger moment. Wow. This one I will surely NEVER forget even though I know I have a wickedly bad memory. I was having a relaxing conversation with Heather in the kitchen while Matty and Ming sat and were hopefully eating, when Drew burst in and suddenly was so insistent. He had to talk to me right away. I asked specifically "Is it an emergency?," knowing Drew has done this before - acting so insistent when it is simply intense curiosity. Well, yes, he replied it is. He led us by the hands out to the hallway where, in a nook on the wall, sat an 'old fashioned' rotary telephone. Exactly the kind I had while growing up in the 60s and 70s and in my family - probably the 80s as well. He said to us "WHAT IS THIS????" and, wow, did we ever laugh. I needed that laugh! How times have changed. I never suspected that a household item from MY youth would be doomed to old-fashioned-dom. neat. I watched with intrigue as Heather happily showed him how you would dial that phone - and it still works. They still use it. We explained to Drew also how people had to stand right up next to the phone and talk - one could not walk all over the house while talking, let alone the yard. He was just fascinated, and asked if he could give it a try. Wow, now I am wondering what items from Drew and Matt's youth will be deemed "old fashioned" by their children.
