Last weekend we dined at Chili's restaurant, (all four of us) for the occasion of celebrating Drew's good third quarter report card. Drew got to pick the restaurant and since we were having pizza the next night he was not allowed to pick Pizza hut. So he picked Chili's. He was leaning towards ruby Tuesday but felt all they had to offer in the way of meals was salads. I tried to convince him they serve good, hot meals there, but he remained skeptical. So, Chili's it was. When we were seated, two funny things happened that we were not expecting. We noticed Matthew started playing peekaboo with a little girl in the adjacent booth. He was playing in a way he has not played before, so it was humorous to see this happening before our eyes. He bent down as not to be seen then popped up, not saying a word. He still does not speak words. The girl and her dad seemed delighted to hear it was his first time playing that.
Moments later Drew noticed a sign on the wall in the foyer. He had a concerned look come across his face and asked me in a serious voice if I had noticed that sign. It was a parking sign that said 'Parking for Chili's Customers only - All others will be towed away, crushed and melted'. Neat to see the concern he had - wanting to see if that was true. He seemed relieved to hear it was not.
Tonight was the Birch Hill Elementary's Literacy Fair showcasing the children's literary talents. The children performed a poetry reading of Wynken, Blynken and Nod and acted out 14 children on the bed, and showcased their books that they have been constructing for two months. This fabulous unit pulled together many concepts they have been studying in different forms for months - bedtime traditions, write about their bed, things with which they sleep, they got to come in pj's if they wanted (Drew did NOT). The teachers had set up very creative displays with the children's work and showcased the quilts they had made with the class' help. Super evening. I know that Mrs. Roach, Mrs. Johnson and the other teachers have been looking forward to this night for months and with tons of hard work. Drew dedicated his book to his aunt (Vicki), whom I assume is Aunt Vicki, for he proclaimed her to be 'the funnest person in the whole world.' They certainly share an amazing bond.

John told me he was heading to school with Drew in the car this morning just as the news program on the radio mentioned some project aimed at preventing young children from having sex. Drew immediately asked 'What does that mean?' as John quickly turned off the @#%&* radio. John wasn't sure how to answer, as it wasn't clear how much Drew really wanted to know. It is only about a three minute drive to school and he was headed to volunteer for the morning as it is his day off, so he told Drew that it was too complicated to explain right then. This annoyed Drew very much and only made him more insistent. 'Oh please tell me! Pleeeeease!' he insisted. So John tried the simplest version that came to mind, saying that they just didn't want young kids to be having babies, since they were too young for that. Drew replied, sort of disappointed, "Oh." Then Drew shot back, "That wasn't so complicated! Why did you say it was too complicated?" John just said that he wasn't sure Drew would understand what he meant, and that seemed to satisfy Drew, closing the subject ? for now.
Ann Rose told me today that at her house yesterday Drew announced that school is having a talent show and that he is going to be in it! When asked about his talent he announced that he is going to annoy people with the very annoying little humming tune he hums all the time, the 'nare na na nare' song. He seemed very pleased, Ann said. I think we'll have to check into that. ;)

Hello all,
This morning was pretty amusing for me, as I prepared the boys' breakfasts and made Drew's lunch. It has been more complicated for the past week and a half, as he has a very loose tooth making it difficult to eat without pain. He often moans and groans during meals and I can't help wanting to help. This morning I did - I smushed bananas in a bowl and poured on the honey, just the way Drew likes. He has told me that even soft foods lately have been bothering him, because he has been tugging at the tooth with his tongue to loosen it and it has gotten irritated. So I was proud of smushing the bananas but he was so disturbed upon seeing it. He said he felt like a baby having to eat such soft food, no matter how I told him I did it for his own good and out of love. I finally told him to just eat because school was starting soon. Then he complained of how matt would surely laugh at him for eating 'baby food' and I assured him that Matt doesn't notice what he is eating, let alone know anything about embarrassment. The only thing Matt notices about Drew's plate is if it contains food that Matt wants (he is 18 months now)! So I pulled Matt's high chair across the kitchen to the sink where I was filling the dishwasher and we both did out best not to watch him. He ate his bananas and honey while our backs were to him, and off to school he went. Wow, it is amazing the lengths he will go to prove what a 'big boy' he is these days. Any hint of being treated like a child is the worst thing in the world!
